Planting with native species in a rural setting
Completed for a family at Peers Road, Omanawa
Project value: $45,000
For a farming family building a new architectural home, the landscape needed to look beautiful as well as complement the rural setting, respect the natural environment, and provide a sustainable, low-maintenance solution. They asked Tauranga Landscaping to design and plant out extensive banks surrounding their property, with an emphasis on native species and environmentally conscious practices.
The challenge
The client wanted a planting plan that balanced aesthetic appeal with practicality. Every plant had to be suitable for the rural environment, friendly to animals, and capable of thriving long-term with minimal upkeep. Another challenge was the limited availability of some specific native species, which were central to achieving the desired look and performance.
The solution
We partnered with a local landscape designer to create a planting scheme that would integrate seamlessly with the surrounding farmland and architecture. Our team managed the full planting process, while our nationwide nursery network helped us source hard-to-find native varieties. To give the plants the best start, we used environmentally friendly matting to suppress weeds and support establishment, as well as specialist slow-release fertiliser and supplements to aid in root development.
The result
The transformation is striking. Within 18 months, the once-barren banks have matured into lush native gardens that frame the new home beautifully, protect the soil, and enhance the wider landscape. This project demonstrates how thoughtful planning and planting can create a sustainable, lasting feature that adds value and enjoyment to a rural property.
